More tourists to come to Siem Reap
Siem Reap province’s tourism department reports international tourist arrivals to the province increased 10% during January to June this year.
Siem Reap Department of Tourism deputy director, Chung Sokhemarak, said the province welcomed 1.2 million visits in the first half of the year, a10% increase over the same period last year.
“Despite political unrest in neighbouring countries – the coup in Thailand and tensions in Vietnam over a sovereignty dispute with China – the province had still enjoyed a steady rise in visits.”
The province should attract 2.5 million visitors, this year, even though the low season months see arrivals drop significantly. By October the peak season begins again pushing hotel occupancies to the limit of capacity for the last three months of the year.
Siem Reap recently ranked second among the top 10 best Asian cities for tourists in a poll of Travel + Leisure magazine readers.
Siem Reap’s main attraction is Angkor Wat Historical Park, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992 and is now the kingdom’s largest cultural tourist destination.
Last year, Siem Reap received 2,237,286 foreign tourists increasing 8.4% from 2,063,336 visits in 2012.
